Scope note
The Rakhine are a predominantly Theravada Buddhist ethnic group native to the Rakhine State of southwestern Myanmar, with communities also present in Bangladesh and India, comprising approximately 4.61% of Myanmar's total population. Encompassing seven distinct subgroups, they speak a language closely related to Burmese within the Tibeto-Burman language family and have historically been influenced by their proximity to the Indian subcontinent, maintaining long-standing trade and cultural ties with South Asia. The Rakhine people possess a distinct cultural heritage, including their own kingdoms, dynasties, scripts, coinage, and traditions, and their history spans from ancient kingdoms through periods of conquest by the Mughal Empire and Burmese Bamar, to their present-day status in Myanmar.
