- The Madurese are an Austronesian ethnic group native to the island of Madura and the northern part of eastern Java, Indonesia, comprising the country's fifth-largest ethnic group and speaking their own distinct Madurese language across diverse regional varieties. With approximately six million living on their ancestral island and additional communities throughout Java and beyond, the Madurese diaspora is traditionally known for trade, farming, and the practice of Pencak silat, and are recognized as the largest owners of traditional grocery shops in Indonesia. The Madurese have made notable contributions to Indonesian culture, including the invention of satay and the Karapan sapi bull race, while also playing a pioneering role in classical Islamic religious movements through the Pondok Pesantren educational tradition.
