It is a complex mixture of 33 high molecular weight alcohols and 36 fatty acids, including cholesterol. One of the unique properties of lanolin is that it can incorporate up to 25-30% water without separation. Since it is readily absorbed by skin, lanolin is used as an emollient in cosmetics, ointments, leather, and as a rust preventative. Lanolin's role in nature is to protect wool and skin of the animal against the environment, also having a role in hygiene. ]]></termNote><termCreatedDate>2026-03-30 20:40:03</termCreatedDate><relation><relationType>UF</relationType><termId>31370987</termId><termName>lanoline</termName><termType>ND</termType></relation><relation><relationType>UF</relationType><termId>31370988</termId><termName>wool wax</termName><termType>ND</termType></relation><relation><relationType>UF</relationType><termId>31370989</termId><termName>wool-fat</termName><termType>ND</termType></relation><relation><relationType>BT</relationType><termId>31340173</termId><termName>animal wax</termName><termType>PT</termType></relation><relation><relationType>RT</relationType><termId>31455269</termId><termName>Ovis</termName><termType>PT</termType></relation></term> </Zthes>
