In ancient and medieval times, the brazilwood was imported to Europe from the Middle East (Caesalpinia braziliensis and other species). Caesalpinia echinata (called pau-brasil in Portuguese) is indigenous to the Brazilian coast and played a role in the naming of that country; it was an important wood and dye export from South America beginning in the 17th century. Its hard, red-color wood is used for violins and high quality furniture. It accepts a high polish. The wood contains the colorant brasilin, a hydroxyanthraquinone, that gives a deep red to brownish color. Brazilwood dye, has been used for textile and leather dyes, inks, paints, varnish tints, and wood stains. ]]></termNote><termCreatedDate>2026-03-30 21:02:24</termCreatedDate><relation><relationType>UF</relationType><termId>31454793</termId><termName>Brazil-wood genus</termName><termType>ND</termType></relation><relation><relationType>UF</relationType><termId>31454794</termId><termName>brazilwood genus</termName><termType>ND</termType></relation><relation><relationType>BT</relationType><termId>31435655</termId><termName>Fabaceae</termName><termType>PT</termType></relation><relation><relationType>NT</relationType><termId>31468198</termId><termName>Caesalpinia brasiliensis</termName><termType>PT</termType></relation><relation><relationType>NT</relationType><termId>31468200</termId><termName>Caesalpinia echinata</termName><termType>PT</termType></relation><relation><relationType>NT</relationType><termId>31468205</termId><termName>Caesalpinia sappan</termName><termType>PT</termType></relation><relation><relationType>RT</relationType><termId>31437172</termId><termName>brazilwood dye</termName><termType>PT</termType></relation><relation><relationType>RT</relationType><termId>31456580</termId><termName>brazilwood</termName><termType>PT</termType></relation></term> </Zthes>
