Scope note:

Visual works, or parts of works, where the image or design is made with small pieces of specially shaped wood, ivory, or other materials, often incorporated into a suface of decorative veneer in furniture or interior surfaces. Distinguished from "inlays (decorations)," where decorative pieces are set into a solid ground; in marquetry work, the entire surface is veneered. For less complex designs made of veneer, prefer "veneering (visual works)."
