Scope note:

Small decorated wooden objects, usually sold as souvenirs, developed by William and Andrew Smith in the Scottish town of Mauchline in the first half of the nineteenth century. This type of objects was named after the town although it was also made elsewhere. The objects included tartan-covered book covers, snuff boxes, and napkin rings decorated with transfer-printed topographical scenes.
