Anotations

Scope note:

Early cinema works that relied on the technology of the camera or editing techniques such as split-screen, stop-motion, double-exposure, or substitution shots as special effects to create surprising or seemingly magical tranformations onscreen. These works first appeared in the late 19th century, created by Georges Méliès, the French showmen Émile and Vincent Isola, the British magicians David Devant and John Nevil Maskelyne, and later by American cinematographers Billy Bitzer and James Stuart Blackton. The term is reserved for a genre of early cinema distinct from contemporary films that may also employ special effects.
