Scope note:

Devices comprising a tube or pipe, often bent with one end placed in a container or reservoir of liquid, such as a bottle or basin, and the other end outside it at a lower level. The aim is to convey liquid upwards from the container and out from the lower end of the pipe or tube. The liquid is conveyed through differences in atmospheric pressure on the liquid in the upper container that pushes it into the tube as gravity pulls downwards the liquid in the lower length of tubing; another force that accounts for the rise of the liquid up the tube has been attributed to the cohesiveness or tensile strength of the moving liquid rather than to atmospheric pressure.
