Anotations

Scope note:

Refers to Medieval monumental crosses, usually of stone, used to mark an outdoor place, typically a sacred place, a burial spot, or an assembly point in the Celtic lands of Ireland, Scotland or elsewhere. They are generally inscribed or decorated in low relief in the Celtic style, influenced by Viking art. The form is typically the Latin cross with a ring around the point of vertical and horizontal intersection; however, some of the oldest examples are single stone pillars that have been decorated and inscribed.
