Anotations

Scope note:

A romanticized architectural style of the latter part of the 19th and early 20th century inspired by chalets in Switzerland. The style spread to other parts of Europe and North America. Unlike the Swiss buildings, which were always made of wood, chalet style buildings are often of brick or other construction, with wood detailing. Elements of the style include overhanging roofs, elaborately decorated carvings, decorative trusses, and wood shutters with cut-outs. Elements of the style are most often found in the construction of domestic single-family homes, but also mansions, hotel buildings, and other commercial structures.
