Scope note:

An international telegraphy system consisting of a network of teleprinters connected by telecommunication lines. Subscribers to a telex service may exchange text and data directly and securely with one another. When a message is sent, it may either be printed immediately or stored for subsequent printing or display on a monitor. Frequently capitalized, 'telex' in ordinary usage is not a proprietary term. 'Telex' is a registered trademark in the United States, but in in most other countries telex systems were operated by government agencies. The names of some specific products (radio equipment, hearing aids, etc.) of the Telex Corporation are registered as trade marks.
