Scope note:

Culture and styles of the Hindu Rajput princes, who came to power after the collapse of the Gupta empire. Their courts were often Hindu centers of learning and they were patrons of poets, scholars and artists. In the area of Rajput painting, there were markedly Indian characteristics that contrasted with style of Muslim Mughals. Mughal artistic developments affected traditional manuscript illumination of the Rajput courts in the late 16th-early 17th centuries. Important developments included portrait painting in Rajput artistic centers, favoring the symbolic and poetic rather than realistic.The two main groups were Rajasthani and Pahari.
