Technique in paintings or the painting of sculptures in which gold leaf is applied to depicted costume or other textiles, or other details, in order to intensify the visual effect. The technique is seen in Byzantine, Medieval, and early European Renaissance paintings, but reached its zenith in Spanish colonial art.
