Scope note:

Skirts, usually made from felt, falling to the knee or just below, with a nipped waist and full silhouette. These were popular in the United States during the early 1950s. So-called because they often included an appliqué of a poodle, though variations of the applied image were common, and were often personalized. The original invention is credited to Julie Lynn Charlot, who sold pre-made skirts as well as patterns for home construction.
