Scope note:

During the Iron Age, settlements were the settings for ritual activities which included the making of special deposits. A series of rectangular ditched enclosures known as Viereckschanzen is concentrated in the temperate regions of central Europe. Many include deposits of iron weapons and tools in the ditches.
