Scope note:

General term for Native North American period and culture dating approximately 1000- 200 BCE, characterized by the continuation of traditions begun during the Late and Terminal Archaic periods, such as mound-building, burial complexes, inter-regional trade, reliance on wild and domesticated plants, and movements of small groups to exploit seasonally available resources. Production of pottery became more widespread in the following regions: Eastern Interior, the Southeast, and the Northeast; the Far Northeast, the Sub-Arctic, and a bit later, the Northwest and Plains regions.
