Heavily armed and well-manned merchant ships of the Dutch East India Company, or Verenigde Oostindische Compagnia, VOC. These were specifically designed for the long roundtrip, or 'retour,' voyage from the Netherlands to the East Indies. These vessels were also repeatedly used as warships.
