Scope note:

Refers to a type of embroidery that is drawn thread work done in white thread on white material. It is characterized by being worked in fine muslin, on which a variety of drawn fabric stitches are combined with designs of floral sprigs and other motifs executed in satin stitches so that the effect is somewhat akin to lace. Work of this type was know in 13th-century Germany and other places, but it is named after the shire or county of Ayr, Scotland, where the work was produced from 1780 on.
