Scope note:

Style of textiles, particularly floor coverings, handwoven in the village of Saruq, north of Arak in western Iran. The early carpets are characterized as being of very good quality and having short pile and a variety of designs. The medallion decorative schemes that were introduced in the early 20th century are sometimes awkward. Saruk carpets that were produced on a large commercial scale are characterized by a longer pile and rose-colored fields filled with disconnected floral sprays and plant forms. Saruk carpets are asymmetrically knotted on a cotton foundation. Mahal and Muskabad are trade names for village carpets of varying quality that come from the neighborhood of Arak.
