Scope note:

One of the largest family of marine bivalve mollusks comprised of over 200 species. The two valves of the shell are symmetrical, and range in colour from brown to red or yellow. The outer shell surface of many species can be smooth; others have ridges that radiate from the hinge area between the shells.
