Scope note:

General term for either a blue (BaCuSi4O10) or purple (BaCuC2O6) pigment found in paints and ceramic glazes on Chinese artifacts; made by melting silica with copper and barium at very high temperatures. Developed in China and used to create Chinese blue and Chinese purple.
