Scope note:

Basic lead chromate pigment that ranges in shades from brown-yellow orange to a brick-red color, depending on particle size and the ratio of lead oxide to lead chromate. It was first made in 1809 by Vauquelin by heating lead chromate and sodium hydroxide solution to form basic lead chromate. It is not used as a permanent paint due to its tendency to turn brown on contact with sulfur in the atmosphere, react with other pigments, and turn green with exposure to sunlight. Most often, chrome red is used as an anticorrosive base coats for steel.
