Scope note:

A quartz crystal microbalance is an extremely sensitive sensor which weighs mass per area by measuring change in the freqency of an acoustic resonator. It is composed of a specially cut quartz crystal set between two electrodes that oscillates at its resonance frequency when AC power is applied through the electrodes due to the piezoelectric effect.
