Scope note:

Species of medium-sized horse chestnut native to the midwestern and lower Great Plains regions of the United States and some areas of Canada. The fruits contain tannic acid, and are poisonous for cattle and humans. Native Americans blanched them to extract tannic acid for processing leather.
