Anotations

Scope note:

Arches characteristic of Renaissance and later classicizing styles, consisting of a large central opening under a semicircular arch flanked by two smaller rectangular openings. Illustrated in Serlio's 'Architettura' (1537), and considered a characteristic element of Palladian architecture. Named for Veneto architect Andrea Palladio, or in reference to Sebastiano Serlio, who wrote an architectural treatise describing similar arches of ancient Rome.
