Scope note:

Pairs of shoes or slippers with handmade beaded faces, typically worn by Peranakan communities in various Southeast Asian countries. The intricate designs of the beaded faces are handsewn using specific coloured glass or metal seed beads onto fabric stretched over a wooden frame. Common decorative motifs for kasut manek include florals, birds, and geometric patterns. “Kasut manek” are typically worn with the sarong-kebaya and on special occasions such as weddings, as part of the Peranakan wedding outfit. Kasut manek may be closed or open-toed and could also be designed with heels.
