Scope note:

European avant-garde doctrine or school of art that existed between 1932 and ca. 1960. The musicalists attempted, influenced by the works of František Kupka and Auguste Herbin, to ‘compose’ abstract paintings, and incorporated musical concepts such as ‘harmony’ and ‘resonance’ in their compositions. Characteristic for their works are vibrant colours and rhythmic lines. The driving force and main theorist behind the movement was French artist Henry Valensi, other associates were Charles Blanc-Gatti, Louise Janin, Marcel Lempereur-Haut and Gustave Bourgogne. The musicalists often held expositions in the Galerie Renaissance in Paris.
