Anotations

Scope note:

Type of European red-firing slipware, the creation of which can be situated in the second half of the sixteenth and first half of the seventeenth century. The pottery exhibits a red or pinkish-red color with a standing surface and decorations applied by means of a sludge-scratching technique. Werra slipware seems to have been a reaction of German potters to North Holland mud pottery. Examples have been found at sites in Germany and the Netherlands. The name derives from the river on which it was transported and where examples are most often found.
