Scope note:

A woodworking technique for sculpture developed in 9th century Japan in which a block of wood is split in half along the grain and is rejoined after each piece is hollowed out. This lessened the possibility of the final carving cracking in the future, and to reduce weight when creating larger works, particularly figures of the Buddha.
