Anotations

Scope note:

Stone structures, many dating to the Neolithic period, consisting of long, low stone walls that served as mass-kill hunting traps. The walls funneled herds of gazelles or other animals into an enclosure where they fell into a pit or were otherwise killed. The term applies to the over 6,000 such structures constructed at various times, primarily in Arabia, Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia. An alternative use for the structures as animal husbandry corrals had earlier been proposed.
