Scope note:

The Wa people are a Southeast Asian ethnic group primarily inhabiting northern Myanmar's Shan and Kachin States and China's Yunnan Province, in the mountainous region between the Mekong and Salween Rivers. They speak the Wa language, part of the Mon-Khmer language family, and traditionally practice subsistence agriculture while breeding water buffalo for ceremonial use. Most Wa are animists, with smaller populations following Buddhism or Christianity, and their customs closely resemble those of the Naga people to the northwest.
