Anotations

Scope note:

The Akha are an ethnic group inhabiting mountainous regions of Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and China's Yunnan Province, with approximately 80,000 now residing in northern Thailand following migrations that intensified during the 20th century due to civil conflicts. They speak Akha, a Loloish language within the Tibeto-Burman family that is closely related to Lisu. Historical evidence suggests the Akha may have ruled the Baoshan and Tengchong plains in Yunnan prior to the Ming dynasty invasion of 1644.
