Anotations

Scope note:

The Zomi are a Tibeto-Burman speaking ethnic group numbering approximately 1.5 million people distributed across Myanmar (particularly Chin State in the western border region), northeast India (Manipur and Mizoram), Bangladesh, and diaspora communities in Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia. Historically inhabiting settlements in the Chin Hills of the Arakan Range at elevations above 1,000 meters, the Zomi have faced significant displacement, with the Chin National Front fighting the Burmese military government since 1988 and many seeking refuge in India. The vast majority of Zomi are Christian (predominantly Baptist Protestant), with Theravada Buddhist and animist minorities, and the name Zomi is sometimes applied broadly to include related groups such as the Mizos, Kukis, and Hmars.
