Scope note:

The Magars are a Sino-Tibetan/Tibeto-Burman ethnic group native primarily to west-central Nepal, where they represent approximately 6.9% of the national population, with additional communities in northern India, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and diaspora populations worldwide. Their traditional homeland, historically known as Magarat, centered on the Palpa region west of the Gandaki River and was organized into confederations of twelve and eighteen Magar kingdoms during the medieval period. The Magars speak the Magar language (Magar Kura) in two major dialectal groups, practice a blend of Tibetan Buddhism, Hinduism, and shamanistic traditions, and are historically renowned for their service in Gurkha military regiments.
